NOFA Standards for Organic Land Care, 6th Edition

The NOFA Organic Land Care Committee was formed in 1999 to extend the vision and principles of organic agriculture to the care of the landscapes where most people live, work, and carry out their daily lives. The Committee first developed NOFA Standards for Organic Land Care, Practices for Design and Maintenance of Ecological Landscapes in 2001 to present a vision of how organic agricultural principles can be applied to the landscaping profession.

The Standards are the result of years of work by landscape professionals, scientists and citizen activists who donated their time to produce the most complete reference for what qualifies as organic land management. The Standards go far beyond how to grow an organic lawn. They present a philosophy of ecological stewardship in designing and maintaining landscapes. A CT NOFA Committee reviews and updates these Standards approximately every three years. The 6th edition, published in November 2017, is now available as a PDF and in printed form.

The NOFA Standards are also the foundation of the NOFA Accreditation Course in Organic Land Care - an education and accreditation program so as to ensure the growth of the organic landscaping industry in the United States. We believe that all organically land care services will meet or exceed these standards.  To learn about NOFA Accreditation, click here.

Organic Lawn Fertilizer Fact Sheet

After three lawn courses, it was determined that many lawn care providers have difficulty describing how much nitrogen and phosphorous they apply to their lawns. This may mean that providers are not applying the desired amount of fertilizer as well. Chip Osborne and Bernadette Giblin have crafted this excellent resource for calculating and applying accurate amounts of organic fertilizer.
